Inanoralhistoryofhisexperiences,Fredtoldofhisfirstclose-airdogfightcombat.Hewaslowtotheground,withbulletseverywhere,anddeathperhapsaninstantaway.Theinterviewerasked,“Whatwereyouthinkingatamomentlikethat?”Fredanswered,“Iwasthinking,IfinallygotachancetomakesomeGermanpayforyankingmeoutofPurdueUniversity.”Hesurvivedthewar,cameback,stillyoungerthanmostofyou,tofinishhisM.E.degreeandleadalifeofepicaccomplishment.
